Bacteriostatic water is sterile water for injection with benzyl alcohol added as a preservative. The benzyl alcohol limits the growth of bacteria after the stopper has been punctured, which is what lets one 30 mL vial be drawn from many times. Plain sterile water has no preservative and is single-use.
